नियम: यदि Principal Clause (मुख्य खंड) Past Tense में है, तो Subordinate Clause (आश्रित खंड) भी Past Tense में होना चाहिए (काल का अनुक्रम - Sequence of Tense)।

नियम: Indirect Speech में, जब Reporting Verb Past Tense में होता है, तो Reported Speech का Tense भी उसी के अनुरूप बदल जाता है। 'shall' बदलकर 'should' और Present Simple ('want') बदलकर Past Simple ('wanted') हो जाता है।
